Nothing on this guide asks who you are. There is no sign-up, no comment area and no form of any kind, and no cookie is placed in your browser. No advertising or visitor-counting code from another company is loaded either.

What the server does keep is its request log. A line is written for each page fetched, holding the moment of the request, the address requested, the browser’s own description of itself and the network address it was sent from. The content delivery service placed ahead of the server may hold similar counts. The log is read to keep the pages available and to spot automated abuse.
